The Disconnect Between Personal and Professional in The Writing Lab

Imagine staring at a blank document, the cursor blinking like a judgmental eye. This was me at the beginning of The Writing Lab. While The Writing Lab undeniably helped me hone my professional writing skills, I believe there's room for improvement, particularly in bridging the gap between personal expression and professional polish.

Coming from a background of daily journaling, I looked at this program that could have fostered a similar connection with topics. The curriculum felt like a ladder straight to the top, bypassing the crucial lower rungs of building comfort and personal engagement.

Effective writing relies heavily on connection with the subject matter. The Lab focused on delivering grammatically correct pieces with a clear structure, which is valuable, but it often felt like filling a document with words rather than expressing genuine emotions, ideas, or logic.

This disconnect became particularly apparent during a feedback session. I was praised for becoming more "attached" to my writing, which wasn't entirely accurate. It wasn't a deliberate attempt to inject more affection - it was a reflection of my struggle to connect with topics in a way that allowed my authentic voice to flow. The rigid format stifled the exploration phase, where my journaling practice thrived.

The Writing Lab's topic selection could benefit from a more personal and engaging approach. Instead of jumping straight into specific "professional" scenarios, consider a range of prompts that gradually build towards those goals.

Here, the focus was on structure and correctness. It felt like building a castle without a foundation. How could I write convincingly about workplace communication if I wasn't fully invested in the topic? The disconnect was palpable.

For instance, a topic might start with a personal reflection on a relatable experience and then ask participants to analyze it using a professional framework. This allows writers to connect with the topic at an emotional level, making the transition to professional language and structure more natural.

Structured writing is vital, but the current approach often felt restrictive. Perhaps consider offering options for writers to explore structure alongside their writing process. Some might prefer a pre-defined outline, while others flourish with looser frameworks that allow for organic development of ideas.

By incorporating elements that nurture a connection between personal voice and professional writing, The Writing Lab can empower future batches to create pieces that resonate on a deeper level. Imagine the legacy we could leave behind: a program that not only sharpens professional skills but also allows writers to discover the power and beauty of authentic expression on the page.

Mumbai Memoirs: A Journey Through SCoRe and Self-Discovery

 

My journey through the SCoRe program has been a whirlwindfull of opportunities, invaluable connections, and a constant stream of exposure, these past ten months have reshaped my perspective and propelled me toward personal growth I never anticipated.

Looking back, it's astonishing to witness the transformation. From the first day of Hell Week, my initial project presentations seem like distant memories. Today, I stand with a newfound confidence sharpened through countless ups and downs. My initial anxieties about career choice and professional direction were real. However, time has fostered a sense of resilience, reminding me that every twist and turn leads us closer to our ultimate destination.

Entering SCoRe, I harbored a dream of carving a niche in the entertainment industry. My ambition was to become a recognized communication professional, perhaps an artist or talent manager. While the specifics of my future placement remain unknown, one thing is certain: my goals and aspirations remain unwavering. Every experience and  my dedication to inspire others with my story.

This journey isn't just about professional development; it's a deeply personal one. As a native Mumbaikar, Mumbai itself is an emotion. It's the city where my dreams reside, where I yearn to witness their manifestation. The struggles, the triumphs, the tears, and the laughter – Mumbai has witnessed it all.

Leaving SCoRe and entering the professional sphere evokes a bittersweet sentiment. It's an undeniable mark of progress, a step closer to the life I envision. However, the journey doesn't end there. My unwavering dedication assures me that the ladder of success will be climbed, leading me to the destiny I so passionately seek.

These ten months have been a testament to self-improvement. From communication and presentation skills to behavioral etiquette, every facet of my professional persona has undergone a significant evolution.

Beyond academics, SCoRe reignited a long-lost passion – journaling. It was like rediscovering an old friend during the pandemic's isolating grip. Putting pen to paper became a sanctuary, a space where I could pour out my anxieties and find solace in the written word. My journal, a silent confidante, became a witness to my struggles and a testament to the strength I discovered within myself. Revisiting these entries while crafting this memoir has been a poignant journey back in time. It's a reminder of the raw emotions I poured onto the page, the battles I fought, and ultimately, the victories I achieved.

Interestingly, this very act of reflecting on my SCoRe experience has sparked a powerful connection to those journaling days. It's a reminder of the power we hold to heal and grow through self-expression.  In a way, both SCoRe and journaling embody my core belief: wherever life takes me, I leave my footprints. Whether it's through the connections I forge, the knowledge I share, or the impact I make, I strive to leave a positive mark on the world.

The road ahead promises continued success and the achievement of milestones that will define my professional journey. SCoRe has equipped me with the tools and confidence to navigate this path with unwavering dedication.

The Internship Curveball: Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone and Landing on My Feet

They say the only constant in life is change, and there I go, my internship experience embodies that truth! While I envisioned myself diving headfirst into the world of app technology, I found myself unexpectedly thrown a curveball – an intern in the automotive sector. Talk about a plot twist!

My initial reaction was a mixture of disappointment and confusion. The learning curve seemed steeper than anticipated, and I questioned if this detour aligned with my career goals. However, as the wise ones say, "When life throws you lemons, make lemonade." I decided to embrace the challenge and step outside my comfort zone.

The first few days were baptism by fire. I felt like a newbie navigating unfamiliar territory. However, I quickly learned that proactive communication is key. I advocated for myself and expressed my desire to learn and contribute, and to my surprise, it resonated with the team. They gradually involved me in tasks that leveraged my strengths and allowed me to explore new areas.

The internship journey became a masterclass in adaptability. I learned the value of being a good observer, actively absorbing information, and applying it efficiently. From drafting dossiers and reports to contributing to coverage initiatives, I honed my research and writing skills while gaining valuable industry knowledge.

The corporate world isn't always a smooth ride. There were days when I faced mounting pressure and questioned my capabilities. But through it all, I learned the importance of perseverance. I realized that growth often lies outside our comfort zones and that even the most challenging situations can be learning opportunities.
